Fiesta Week | June 16-22

Durham is celebrating its cultural mix with its Annual Fiesta Week, which runs from June 16-22, 2013. The week is organized by the Oshawa Folk Arts Council.

Fiesta Week lets you experience European, Asian and Caribbean cultures and foods without having to get on a plane! The week kicks off with the Fiesta Parade (starting at 12:30 pm) on Father’s Day, followed by a Fiesta Concert in Memorial Park, with entertainment, awards, ethnic cuisine and beer garden.

Throughout the week, you and your family can take in entertainment and sample the food at ethnic pavilions set up around Oshawa.

A fiesta passport is required to enter a pavillion: adult/$8, seniors/$4, children 14 and under/free (when accompanied by an adult).

Teddy Bear Train Ride | July 7

Children 12 and under can ride the historic train between Uxbridge and Stouffville for free when carrying their teddy bear. While the train journeys through the Oak Ridges Moraine, Dr. Bear will check out the teddys and other
plush animals.

All children must be accompanied by an adult (2 children per adult). Round trip fees: adults/ $24; teens (13-17) and seniors (65+)/$22, family (2 adults, 2-3 children)/$69.

Songwriters Wanted | July 2 deadline

Got a song you’d like to perform at the Shelter Valley Folk Festival, August 30 – September 1, 2013? This could be your chance.

Songwriters, young and old, can enter the Festival’s Songwriter’s Showcase. Ten winners will appear at the Showcase on August 1st and three finalists get to perform at the Festival itself. Applications are available online. Deadline July 2nd.

This is the 10th anniversary of the popular long weekend event with its
unique blend of folk, blues and roots music, artisans’ area, wellness and sustainability workshops, children’s village, and harvest foods. This year’s lineup of musical guests includes Lynn Miles, Matthew Barber, Rick Fines, Suzie Vinnick, The Good Lovelies, and a dozen more.
